The Big Wheel (1949) stars entertainment legend Mickey Rooney as Billy Coy, a garage mechanic who dreams of following in his late father's footsteps by becoming a race car driver. Filmed on location at an actual motor speedway, The Big Wheel also incorporates footage taken from real Indy Car races into the story. Directed by Edward Ludwig, the movie tracks Billy's (Mickey Rooney) journey as he pursues his dream of racing at the Indianapolis 500. Along the way, Billy encounters resentful rival drivers, most notably Vic Sullivan (Michael O'Shea), who blames Billy for a fatal car crash. Billy also has to negotiate a love triangle involving a race car owner's daughter, Louise Riley (Mary Hatcher), and singer Dolores Raymond (Lina Romay). Also along for the ride is Billy's mentor, a seasoned mechanic named Arthur Stanley (Thomas Mitchell). How will Billy resolve this romantic entanglement, and will he make it to the big race?
