The Black Cat is a 1941 dark comedy that blends mystery and horror. Henrietta Winslow (Cecilia Loftus) is an elderly widow, living out her last days in a dark and dusty mansion filled with odd rooms and hidden passageways. Soft-hearted Henrietta shares her wealth with her beloved cats, taking in dozens of strays. Despite acting like a crazy cat lady, however, Henrietta owns an impressive fortune. Her unscrupulous family members gather at her mansion, each one eager to inherit her vast wealth. Soon after reading her relatives an updated will, Henrietta is found dead, apparently the victim of a mysterious and brutal murder. It soon becomes clear that hers will not be the only murder that evening. Suspicion grows in the group, settling in turn on Mr. Hartley (Basil Rathbone), Richard (Alan Ladd), Abigail Doone (Gail Sondergaard), the butler (Bela Lugosi), Elaine (Anne Gwynne) and others. Before the night is over, the fate of both the fortune and the visitors will grow increasingly uncertain.moreless
