The Blair Witch Project is a horror film released in 1999, a documentary style movie about Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams, three young film students who hike into the Black Hills near Burkittsville, Maryland, to make a film about the Blair Witch, a legend from the area. They interview locals and learn that a local hermit kidnapped seven children and murdered them in twos, claiming that he was convinced by a spirit of a witch to commit the murders. His method was to have one child face the corner while he killed the other, forcing them to hear the tortured screams of the victim, and then kill the child in the corner. On their second day, they camp where five men were ritualistically murdered, and disturb a cairn in a cemetery. Heather attempts to repair it, but they are haunted by sounds in the darkness when they are attempting to sleep. The three try to return to their car and find themselves going in circles, unable to locate it before nightfall, and when they wake, three cairns are outside of their tent. This is the first of strange events that occur as they look for a way out. Starting with human stick figures hanging from the trees, strange sounds at night, their possessions being rifled through, and culminating with Josh's disappearance, these events lead Mike and Heather to keep moving in fear of their lives. When they think they hear his screams, they have no choice but to follow them, and what happens next is only chronicled through the video cameras they still hold.moreless
