The Blue Lamp is a 1950 English film directed by Basil Dearden and starring Jack Warner, Dirk Bogarde, and Jimmy Hanley. In the Paddington Green neighborhood of London, P.C. George Dixon (Warner) brings new recruit Andy Mitchell (Hanley) under his wing and shows him the ropes. Dixon is about to retire, and his last duty before he does so is to train Mitchell. Despite having worked the same neighborhood for many years, Dixon is unable to answer to the violent Tom Riley. When Dixon and Mitchell respond to a robbery at a nearby movie theatre, he comes face to face with Riley, who aims his gun directly at Dixon. When Dixon fails to talk Riley out of dropping the weapon, Riley shoots him point blank. Dixon is brought to the hospital, but dies almost immediately. It is up to Mitchell to then find Riley and bring him to justice. The Blue Lamp won the Best British Film Award at the 1951 BAFTA Awards.moreless
