The Body Snatcher is a 1945 horror film based on the short story of the same title by Robert Louis Stevenson starring Borlis Karloff as Cabman John Gray, Bela Lugosi as Joseph, and Henry Daniell as Dr. Wolfe "Toddy" MacFarlane. The story takes place in Edinburgh in 1831, a year before the Anatomy Act was passed (which gave doctors the right to dissect donated bodies). When a surgeon gets in a cab, he convinces the cab driver to work for him digging up graves. The surgeon wants fresh corpses in order to dissect and study them. Little does the surgeon know that the cab driver actually finds a new way to find fresh bodies for him; one that doesn't involve digging up any graves. Also starring Edith Atwater, Russell Wade, Rita Corday, Sharyn Moffett, and Donna Lee, The Body Snatcher was directed by Robert Wise. In 2005 the film was released on DVD as part of the Val Lewton Horror Collection for the first time.moreless
