In fact, he becomes very rich and powerful, and builds an empire from the ground up. However, this empire is plagued by corrupt officials running the political machine, which now stretches across the entire state of Missouri. With all this fortune and fame, Matt realizes they do not bring true happiness as his life begins spiraling down. He goes on a drinking binge where he alienates his fiance and marries a complete stranger, while upsetting his brother in the process. His blind ambition, bitterness, and belligerence bring about the downfall of Matt and his complete control of the state. Byron Haskin directs this intense drama about a war veteran rising to the top and falling to the bottom.
