The Boy with Green Hair is the 1948 American comedy that serves as a parable about public reaction. A little boy named Peter Fry (Dean Stockwell) loses his parents in the London blitz and is shuffled from one narcissistic relative to the next, wondering about their fate. He ends up living with Gramp Fry (Pat O'Brien), with whom he gets along well, until he discovers what happened to his parents. When he realizes that he has been left an orphan, his hair suddenly and mysteriously turns green. The community immediately mocks and rejects him for his difference. Parents in the community become distraught that it might be contagious. Peter immediately runs away and shaves his head. The story opens with him being interviewed by a police psychologist and unfolds from there. As Peter's story continues, it becomes clear that he has the opportunity to communicate to the world that war is bad for children, that it causes them to grow up with anxiety and uncertainty.moreless
