The Boynton Beach Club is a romantic comedy about six seniors who, though widowed, are determined not to face this new phase of life alone. The group of 60-somethings meets at a Florida bereavement club for emotional support, but soon they are encouraging each other to reenter the modern world of dating and sex. Jack (Len Cariou), for example, in decades of marriage, kissed no other woman than his wife. With his wife's passing come new lessons in courtship; Harry (Joseph Bologna) enthusiastically teaches Jack the ways of a lady's man. Harry, at the same time, is learning the dangers of internet dating. The women of the club, Sandy (Sally Kellerman), Lois (Dyan Cannon) and Marilyn (Brenda Vaccaro), never hide the fact that they are looking for hot men and are not shy about making the first move. Director Susan Seidelman produced The Boynton Beach Club with her mother, Florence, who took the real-world experiences of a widowed friend and turned them into a sincere story about finding love after loss.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Smoothly balancing comedy and pathos, it infuses the fantasy with enough credibility to make you care about these people and wish them merrily on their way.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Carina Chocano

As a niche entertainment catering to an overlooked audience, Boynton Beach Club is remarkable mostly for its optimism and solid performances.

  • 70

    Variety Ronnie Scheib

Briskly paced humor and/or pathos flow organically from situation and characters.
