The Brave One is a 2007 crime drama directed by Neil Jordan and starring two-time Academy Award winner Jodi Foster in a story about a woman who, after surviving a traumatizing violent attack in New York City, illegally acquires a handgun and embarks on a spree of vigilante justice as she tracks down the gang of thugs that ruined her life. Foster plays Erica Bain, a radio show host engaged to David (Naveen Andrews), a handsome and kind-hearted man. One night, Erica and David are viciously attacked by thugs while walking in Central Park. The criminals kill David and leave Erica for dead. She recovers, but she's unable to shake the fear and anger inside of her following the attack. Erica then buys an illegal handgun and begins exterminating every criminal she meets, a crime spree that is further complicated when she strikes up a friendship with the police detective (Terrence Howard) assigned to investigate the mysterious murders. The Brave One is an exciting film, featuring Mary Steenburgen, Jane adams, and Nicky Katt in supporting roles.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Variety Justin Chang

Foster's pistol-packing turn as an avenging dark angel nearly sustains director Neil Jordan's grim vigilante drama through a string of implausibilities and occasionally trite psych...

  • 40

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Don't be fooled. The Brave One, though well cast and smoothly directed, is just as crude and ugly as you want it to be.

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Trapped in a no man's land between seriousness and pulp trash, it plays like a combination of "Death Wish" and "The Hours." If that sounds like an awkward fit, it is.
