The Break is the story of an unlikely duo beating the odds and overcoming many obstacles to take on the world of professional tennis. Nick Irons (Vincent Van Patten) is banned from professional tennis after punching another player during a televised match. As his life hits rock bottom, he is hired by his bookie Gil Robbins (Martin Sheen) to discourage his son from pursuing a career in tennis. At first, everything goes according to plan. Joel Robbins (Ben Jorgensen) is eccentric and untrained. Eventually though, inspired by his pupil's determination and encouraged by his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Hudson (Rae Dawn Chong), Nick decides to show Joel all the tricks of his profession. Nick helps his student gain the psychological, physical strength, and skill to earn respect on and off the court. Together, Nick and Joel take on rigged games, the objections of Joel's father, and stiff competition to play for the fame and the glory of the championship tennis match.
