The Browning Version is a 1994 drama about Andrew Crocker-Harris (Albert Finney), a teacher at a prepatory academy. Although he is an intelligent scholar of Greek and Latin and has been a teacher for two decades, Andrew is deeply unhappy. He finds it difficult to relate to the energetic young students and has made enemies of many of the boys. Andrew's reputation is so negative that many of the students are happy when they hear of Andrew's early retirement. The stern teacher's marriage to Laura (Greta Scacchi) is a farce, since Laura is unfaithful and distant, almost a stranger to her own husband. She carries on an affair with one of her husband's young colleagues, Frank (Matthew Modine). A traditional man, Andrew is heartbroken by his apparent failure as both a teacher and a husband, but cannot find a way to openly express his pain. Unexpectedly, a young student, Taplow (Ben Silverstone), might be able to reawaken Andrew's ability to believe in human kindness.moreless
