The Buddy Holly Story is 1978 Biopic starring Gary Busey in his only Academy Award nominated role. The film opens on a Lubbock, Texas roller rink. Buddy Holly’s band (later known as the Crickets) are playing live on the radio, upsetting the entire town with Rock n’ Roll, the music that will, a short time later, take control of all the nation’s teenagers. The story takes the crickets from their humble beginnings to Memphis, TN to New York, NY, touring all over the country, to that tragic night in 1959, when Holly played his final show. Directed by Steve Rash, The Buddy Holly Story almost acts as a musical. Instead of weaving the story and music together, the film’s plot is put on hold while Gary Busey, himself plays all of Holly’s hits. Buddy Holly: His Life and Music, the biography that served as the basis for the film was written by John Goldrosen.
