The Butcher Boy is a dark 1997 drama about a young Irish boy trying to survive his bleak family life. Francie Brady (Eamonn Owens) lives with his maudlin, alcoholic father, Da (Stephen Rea), and his suicidal mother, Ma (Aisling O'Sullivan), who gets sent to a mental asylum after trying to commit suicide. He escapes his sad family life by playing wild adventure games with his best friend, Joe Purcell (Alan Boyle). But the boys' fun and games come to an end when Mrs. Nugent (Fiona Shaw) accuses the youngsters of theft, and Francie gets sent to a youth home run by abusive priests. Eventually Francie returns home and works at a local butcher shop, but begins to mentally fall apart when he discovers that Joe has befriended Mrs. Nugent's son, Phillip (Andrew Fullerton). Joe blames Mrs. Nugent for his lonely fate and begins to entertain dark, vindictive fantasies of revenge. Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game") directs this sad and violent tale of despair.moreless
