The Cable Guy is a story about a cable installer with an obsessive personality who would kill to win the friendship of his latest customer, literally. Steven Kovacs has recently moved into a new apartment after things go sour between him and his ex-girlfriend, Robin. Steven has cable installed at his new place. Carrey plays Chip, the cable guy who arrives to install Steven's cable. Steven appreciates Chip's work, and Chip thinks he's made a new friend. Chip begins calling Steven to hang out constantly, demanding they hang out all the time. As Steven tries to work things out with Robin and see his other friends, he realizes Chip doesn't want anyone to distract Steven from their new friendship.
