The Caller is a 2009 dramatic thriller directed by Richard Ledes. In the film, Jimmy Stevens (Frank Langella) is the senior VP for E.N. Corporation. Jimmy is also a Jewish survivor of the WWII bombings in France. The VP is upset with his company's actions in Third World countries. He feels that the company is making great strides in other countries by silently sanctioning inhumane acts against the citizens who live there. Jimmy's internal turmoil finally gets the better of him and he plans to expose his company and hopefully hurt them financially as a punishment for their actions. He knows the consequences of betraying the company may be fatal for him, but he carries out the plan anyway. Anonymously, Jimmy hires Frank Turlotte (Elliott Gould), a private detective, to watch the VP through what he foresees as his last days. Frank does not know Jimmy hired him and he carries out his assignment as instructed. Can Jimmy survive betraying his company, or will they kill him to protect themselves from further damage?moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Variety Ronnie Scheib

Frank Langella's note-perfect, tour-de-force turn as a man elegantly shaping his own demise is nicely counterpointed by a shambling Elliott Gould as a bird-watching private eye.

  • 40

    The Hollywood Reporter Frank Scheck

The resulting cat-and-mouse game -- occupies most of the film's running time, to gradually diminishing results.

  • 30

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Turns into an impenetrable essay on guilt, memory and the fear of death that even Mr. Langella's gravity cannot salvage.
