The Cannonball Run

Movie Summary

Director:
Hal Needham
Released:
1981
Rating:
PG

The Cannonball Run is about a fast talking, washed up race-car driver J. J. McClure. McClure enters an illegal cross-country race from the east coast to the west coast where the only rules are drive and drive fast. McClure's competitors in this highly illegal, yet adrenaline laced race include the former open wheel icon Jamie Blake and his teammate Morris Fenderbaum, heart throbs Jill Rivers and Marcie Thatcher, and a pair of good old boys.. Other racers include a young Jackie Chan, Roger Moore as a goofy version of his James Bond character, and Jamie Farr as a middle eastern oil sheik. Who will make it to the finish line first and claim the prize of world's best driver? You'll root for them all, but you will never guess who wins.

Metacritic Score

  • 38

    Chicago Tribune Gene Siskel

A truly stupid film based on what should have been a surefire hit - a cross-country car race. Too many stars spoil the action, including Burt Reynolds, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis...

  • 25

The Globe and Mail (Toronto) Jay Scott

Farrah Fawcett offers to this corrupt "entertainment" a small measure of the fresh innocence Marilyn Monroe used to bring to her movies; watching her work under these circumstances...

  • 12

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The Cannonball Run is an abdication of artistic responsibility at the lowest possible level of ambition. In other words, they didn't even care enough to make a good lousy movie.
