The Card is a British comedy film based on a book of the same name, written in 1911. It is the journey of Edward Henry Machin (Alec Guiness) from the son of a washer-woman, all the way to the mayor of a large town. Edward's aspirations begin early in life, at the edge of twelve. He is determined to become successful and willing to go through any means to get there. He forges his test results and gets accepted into a wealthy grammar school on a scholarship. He graduates and goes to work for the town solicitor, Mr. Duncalf (Edward Chapman). He is put in charge of planning a wealthy ball and invites himself and others in exchange for favors. He invites the dancing instructor in exchange for lessons, the tailor in exchange for a suit, etc. All this, in hopes of making wealthy connections and moving up in life. Guinness's charismatic nature truly makes this film stand out from others of the period.moreless
