The Careless Years (1957) proves to be a revolutionary film by exploring the controversial subject of teenage sex in the 1950s. When hormonal high school student, Jerry Vernon (Dean Stockwell), crashes a jitterbug dance party he meets the love of his life, Emily Meredith (Natalie Trundy). While it is certainly love at first sight, lust trumps affection as Jerry tells Emily, "I want to make love to you." From here the plot centers on two starry-eyed teens who want to have sex. Knowing that sex is "forbidden" outside of marriage, Jerry proposes to Emily by passing her a note in class. When the couple's parents learn of this, they are furious. In a classic scene, Leave It To Beaver star, Barbara Billingsley (Emily's mother), urges her na''ve daughter to be patient about having sex and not to rush into marriage for physical pleasure. Jerry and Emily are undeterred, however, and they make the bold plan to travel to Mexico for their wedding. The cultural values of the 50s clash with the hormonal impulses of a new generation in this provocative film.moreless
