2005
Rating:

The Cave of the Yellow Dog is touching story about the daughter of a family of nomads that finds a stray dog. When the oldest daughter (Nansal Batchuluun) of a nomadic Mongolian family finds a stray dog in an old cave, she is immediately bonded to the cute pup. Her mother (Buyandulam Daramdadi) is more sympathetic, seeing her daughter happy, but the father (Batchuluun Urjindorj) suspects the dog has been attacking his sheep, and insists that it is returned to the cave. But when the dog saves the life of their youngest son, it seems that the father's judgement may turn around. Renowned academy award nominee Byambasuren Davaa directs this heartwarming film that blurs the line between fact and fiction. Showcasing the simple life of Mongolian nomads, Davaa serves both to tell the story depicted in the film as well as the tale of a dying tradition against a breathtaking landscape.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

Davaa has made a sweetly meditative film.

  • 60

    Variety Derek Elley

Davaa's strong visual sense, engaging cast and respect for basic film grammar make this slim exercise in managed reality go the distance.

  • 50

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

The dog is cute, the children are adorable, and the earth and the sky seem to stretch on without limit in The Cave of the Yellow Dog. Unfortunately, so does the slight story.
