The Champ is a 1979 tear-jerker about a washed-up boxer named Billy Flynn (Jon Voight) and his son T.J. (Ricky Schroder), struggling to get by on their wits and their close bond. Billy is a former lightweight boxing champion who now works as a horse handler in Florida. Billy is both an alcoholic and a compulsive gambler and realizes that he is not able to give T.J. the life he deserves. When T.J.'s mother, Billy's sophisticated ex-wife Annie (Faye Dunaway), shows up after abandoning them years earlier, she pushes Billy to tell the boy that she is his real mother. Billy resists but feels that he should be able to give T.J. a lifestyle comparable to Annie's, now a rich doctor's wife in New York. Billy attempts a comeback in the ring despite suffering from debilitating headaches. Will Billy's comeback succeed? Will T.J. learn that Annie is actually his mother? The Champ is a remake of the 1931 film of the same name, starring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper.moreless
