The Claim is a 2000 British western/romance directed by Michael Winterbottom. It is loosely based on Thomas Hardy's novel "The Mayor of Casterbridge". Daniel Dillon (Peter Mullan) is an Irish immigrant who made his way to the mountains of California during the Gold Rush. He struck it rich and managed to form his own town called Kingdom Come. Over the years, he built up the town and kept ownership of all the profitable businesses, except for the saloon and brothel, which is run by his lover, Lucia (Milla Jovovich). Donald Dalglish (Wes Bentley), a surveyor for the Central Pacific Railroad, arrives in town to decide where the company will put its new train route. He must decide if it would be more profitable to run it through the town or just run it close to town. Daniel can only imagine what it would do for his town to have a train run through it, and he tries to win Donald over. The arrival of an ailing woman (Nastassja Kinski) and her teenage daughter (Sarah Polley) threatens to reveal secrets Daniel would prefer to stay hidden and ruin all of his carefully laid plans.moreless
