The Clan of the Cave Bear is a 1986 film directed by Michael Chapman that was based off the novel of the same name by Jean M. Auel. The film is set in 35,000,000 years ago in prehistoric times, when neanderthals and early cro-magnons both co-existed on the planet. The main character is Ayla (played by Daryl Hannah), a young blond haired, blue eyed cro-magnon who loses her family during a catastrophic earthquake. Lost and alone, Ayla gets adopted by a group of a dark haired clan of cave dwelling neanderthals who raise her. Ayla grows into a courageous and spirited young woman, leading to the ire and jealousy of Broud, a male who is in line to become the leader of the cave clan. Within the neanderthal clan women are considered inferior to the men and Ayla wants to prove this wrong. It is up to Ayla to fight for her survival and prove her worth within her new adopted family and social structure.moreless
