PG-13

The Client is the 1994 blockbuster adaptation of the popular John Grisham (The Firm, The Pelican Brief, A Time to Kill) legal potboiler, directed by celebrated filmmaker Joel Schumacher (The Lost Boys, Falling Down, Phone Booth, The Phantom of the Opera). When young brothers Mark (Brad Renfro) and Ricky Sway sneak off to steal a smoke in the woods, they come across rotund attorney Jerome Clifford, who has parked in a secluded spot to commit suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning, Trying to stall his death, Mark is captured by the lawyer, who reveals that he must take his own life to avoid being murdered by his client Barry 'the Blade' Muldano, who knows he knows where the body of a murdered senator is buried. The film then becomes a race to get to the body before Muldano can remove it and the evidence is gone for Mark's ne'er do well attorney Reggie Love (Susan Sarandon) and DA Foltrigg (Tommy Lee Jones).

Metacritic Score

  • 63

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The setup in The Client is done so well, it deserves a better payoff.

  • 63

    ReelViews James Berardinelli

The Client is an example of what happens when a production team does the best they can possibly do with a routine script.

  • 50

    Austin Chronicle

This movie is much like its brethren: pretty, with strong leads -- the most fun is watching Sarandon match her heavy-lidded orbs against Jones' demon stare -- great supporting work...
