The Constant Gardener is a 2005 drama directed by Fernando Meirelles. It is based on a 2001 novel of the same name by John le Carre. When British diplomat Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes) meets an outspoken activist named Tessa (Rachel Weisz) at a journalist meeting, he falls in love. The couple marries and moves to Kenya, where Tessa constantly tries to get involved in the plight of the African people. Justin does not approve of her activities, causing her to drift away emotionally from him and spend more time with a local doctor, Arnold Bluhm (Hubert Kounde). When Tessa is found murdered on the veldt, police assume that the doctor was her lover and killed her in a fit of jealous rage. Justin is not convinced of that theory and decides to conduct his own investigation. As he is searching for the truth, Justin begins to uncover a startling and deadly conspiracy.

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

A film that grips us dramatically, intellectually and emotionally.

  • 80

The New York Times Dana Stevens

This is a supremely well-executed piece of popular entertainment that is likely to linger in your mind and may even trouble your conscience.

  • 80

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Succeeds in capturing the book's essential themes and concerns, albeit in a hectic style that could not be more antithetical to that of the literary master of international intrigue.
