The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is a 1989 French/British film that chronicles the tumultuous love affair between Georgina (Helen Mirren), a mob boss' wife, and Michael (Alan Howard). Albert Spica (Michael Gambon), Georgina's husband, goes to his restaurant with his gang of thugs every night and tortures the staff and fellow customers. When the patronage disappears, Albert does not care, but continues to go to the restaurant nightly. Georgina is embarrassed to be seen with her husband, and she quickly falls for fellow restaurant regular Michael. When Albert learns of the love affair, Georgina hides out in Michael's bookstore. Albert then tortures a young messenger to discover the location of the store. One day when Georgina returns to the store she finds Michaels' tortured, dead boy and vows revenge against her husband.
