PG-13
The Core is a 2003 science fiction action film directed by Jon Amiel. Strange events are happening all around the globe. The Golden Gate Bridge has collapsed in San Francisco. Swarms of pigeons are attacking London, England. The Roman Colosseum crumbles under the force of a huge electrical superstorm. People are beginning to panic and demand answers from the world's leaders. Baffled by the freak events, government officials bring in Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart), a renowned geophysicist, to solve the problem. Keyes quickly recognizes the underlying problem - the earth's core has stopped rotating. As the core slowed down, the electromagnetic field surrounding the earth began to collapse. Keyes proposes a radical, risky plan. He and his team will build a machine capable of burrowing deep beneath the surface of the earth to the core. If they can make it to the core, they'll bomb the core, hoping to jump-start the core back into rotation. If this dangerous plan fails, earth will be doomed. The Core features an all-star cast including Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Delroy Lindo, Bruce Greenwood and D.J. Qualls.moreless

    Variety Todd McCarthy

More palatable than most pictures of its ilk due to its keen awareness of its own preposterousness, a self-knowledge exuberantly expressed by a mostly live-wire cast.

If The Core finally has to be classified as a mess, it is an enjoyable one if you're in a throwback mood. After all, a film that comes up with a rare metal called Unobtainium can't...

The cast of The Core deserve Oscar nominations just for being able to speak most of the lines without succumbing to the chortles.
