The Counterfeiters is a 2007 drama from Austrian writer-director Stefan Ruzowitzky and starring Karl Markovics and August Diehl in a story about a Nazi plot during World War II to destroy England's economy by flooding the country with forged bills, and the Jewish counterfeiter the Nazis recruited to assist with the project. Markovics plays Salomon “Sally” Sorowitsch, a talented Jewish forger who is captured by the Nazis and thrown into a labor camp during World War II. Salomon struggles to survive the harsh conditions and brutal guards of the labor camp by painting portraits, hoping to be recognized for his artistic ability. He does get recognized, and soon the Nazis have taken Salomon to a comfortable bunk with a washroom and plenty of food. However, in exchange for these basic comforts, Salomon must aid the Nazis in Operation Bernhard, a scheme to gain the upper hand in the war by destroying the Allies' economies with forged money. Salomon must choose between the plight of his people and his own survival. The Counterfeiters is a gripping story, and the film won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.moreless
