The Courageous Dr. Christian is one of the six movies that are part of a drama series about a noble and dedicated doctor, Dr. Christian (Jean Hersholt), which was released in 1940 and directed by Bernard Vorhaus. Dr. Paul Christian is devoted to his medical practice and cares for those who suffer in spite of lack of support from River's End town authorities. In his endeavor to improve the town's health care and to put more smiles on patients' faces, he is helped by his faithful assistants, nurse Judy Price (Dorothy Lovett) and pharmacist Roy Davis (Robert Baldwin), who is also Judy's romantic partner. When a massive epidemic of spinal meningitis affects the area of the town mostly inhabited by poor people, the authorities and the rest of the townsfolk hesitate to take action. Dr. Christian recognizes the need for immediate measures to ensure the safety of the healthy people and to treat the sick. Once again he is forced to fight ignorance before he can convince the locals to get involved into solving the serious public health problem. Dr. Christian also has to deal with flirting Mrs. Stewart (Vera Lewis) and her romantic signals.moreless
