Movie Summary

Director:
Louie Psihoyos
Released:
2009
Rating:
PG-13

The Cove is a 2009 documentary directed by former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos and starring legendary marine life activist Ric O'Barry in a comprehensive analysis of the Japanese whaling industry and hunting tradition that seeks to draw attention to the damage being done by this archaic practice. O'Barry first came to the public's attention in the 1960s, when the television series Flipper became popular. Flipper followed the adventures of a highly-intelligent bottlenose dolphin, and O'Barry initially worked as the dolphin trainer in charge of capturing and training the five dolphins used in the show. However, after the death of one of the dolphins (a death that O'Barry insists was a suicide), O'Barry quit dolphin training and becoming a marine activist. This exciting film follows O'Barry's attempts to evade suspicion by the Japanese government and document the grisly truth about Japanese dolphin and whale hunting. The Cove is an acclaimed documentary that won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2010.
