The Cow is a chilling Iranian tale about a man who develops an obsessive relationship with his cow. Masht Hassan (Ezzatolah Entezami) owns the only cow in his small Iranian village, but to him the bovine is more than just a piece of property. His feelings of oneness with the animal border on dangerously obsessive, as he treats it just like he would his own child. However, when Hassan leaves on a trip outside the village for a few days, the cow mysteriously dies, leaving the townspeople understandably shaken and concerned. They arrange a secret burial for the animal before Hassan returns, and tell him the cow ran away, but nothing can prepare them for the loving owner's reaction. Convinced his beloved cow did not indeed run away, Hassan slowly descends into madness, first believing it is still there, then later taking on its traits, in a chilling look into an obsessed mind unable to let a prized possession go. Dariush Mehrjui directs brave film, that was smuggled to the Venice film festival after it was banned by the Shaw in Iran.moreless
