The Crazies is a low budget 1973 horror film directed by George Romero. The film follows the events occurring in the small town of Evan's City, Pennsylvania after a biological weapon has accidentally gone off. A government plane with experimental biological weapons on it has crash landed and it's chemical cargo has seeped into the town's water supply. Now anyone who drinks this tainted water goes stark raving mad, leading to murder and rioting throughout the town. A firefighter named David (played by Will McMillan) and his wife Judy (played by Lane Carroll) are two of the only town people uncorrupted by the water. Now it is up to them to escape, along with a few others....But can they? And as bad as it was already things start to get really bad once the army shows up to contain the epidemic...This film was remade with a much higher budget in 2010.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Time

Though it's the townspeople who slowly fall victim to the epidemic, the white-suited, gas-masked military men are just as imposing as any movie virus.

  • 78

    Austin Chronicle

Like Night of the Living Dead, The Crazies offers no hope, no comfort and sure as hell no happy ending.

  • 75

    Slant Magazine Eric Henderson

The Crazies lacks the nightmarish momentum of Romero's best zombie flicks, but it's no less astute with its allegorical potshots.
