The Crime of Padre Amaro is a 2002 drama directed by Carlos Carrera. The film follows Father Amaro (Gael Garc''a Bernal), a young recently ordained priest, who is sent to Los Reyes, Mexico to assist an aging local priest, Father Benito (Sancho Gracia). Not long after he arrives, Father Amaro draws the attention of 16-year-old Amelia (Ana Claudia Talanc''n). Ameilia's religious devotion turns to passion and the two enter into a forbidden love affair. Father Amaro soon learns that Amelia's mother, Augustina Sanjuanera (Ang''lica Arag''n) had been having a secret affair with Father Benito for years. As Father Amaro descends further into the life of the local parish, he soon discovers that Father Beniito's affair is just the tip of the iceberg. From relationships with drug lords to support for guerilla troops in the highlands, Father Benito and other priests from the diocese are far from the idealistic men Father Amaro aspired to be when he joined the church.
