The Crucible, written by famous American playwright Arthur Miller, is the story of John Proctor (Daniel Day Lewis) and his affair with Abigail Williams (Winona Ryder). When Abigail is caught drinking chicken's blood in the woods with other girls from Salem, Massachusetts, she blames Tituba, their Barbadian slave, for setting a spell on her. After a whipping left her with no other choice, Tituba confesses to being a witch. Excited by their power, Abigail and her friends begin naming others that are witches, including Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife. John confessed to his affair with Abigail out of desperation, but unfortunately his plea does not work, and the town turns against John, fearing that he too might be a witch. Despite a last minute confession attempt by Elizabeth, John is sentenced to death. Directed by Nicholas Hytner and released by 20th Century Fox, The Crucible also stars Paul Scofield, Joan Allen, Bruce Davison, Rob Campbell, and Jeffrey Jones.
