Movie Summary

Scott Derrickson
The Day the Earth Stood Still is the 2008 remake of the legendary Robert Wise original, updated with a modern sensibility and cutting edge special effects. Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) helms the story of an alien traveler, Klaatu (Keanu Reeves, Speed, The Gift, Point Break, Bram Stoker's Dracula, A Walk in the Clouds), who heads to Earth along with his bodyguard robot, Gort, to deliver a warning of planetary destruction if the people of the world fail to bring peace to their civilizations. Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, The Hulk, Labyrinth, The Rocketeer, Requiem for a Dream) stars as Dr. Helen Benson, a Ph.D. who heads up the effort to study and understand the strange visitor and is joined by a respectable cast of brilliant actors, including Jon Hamm (Madmen, The Town), and Kathy Bates (Misery, About Schmidt, Dolores Claiborne) who co-star in the David Scarpa-penned film.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

This contemporary remake of the science-fiction classic knew what it was doing when it cast Keanu Reeves, the movies' greatest stone face since Buster Keaton.

  • 40

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Any movie that awards a former Monty Python cast member a Nobel Prize in anything cannot be all bad. And The Day the Earth Stood Still could be worse.

  • 40

    Variety Todd McCarthy

This botched remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" seriously dishonors the seriously fine 1951 sci-fi landmark on which it's based.
