The Death of Mr. Lazarescu is a 2005 Romanian black comedy about an elderly man whose attempts to get medical care may end up costing him his life. Dante Lazarescu (Ioan Fiscuteanu) is a retired engineer who lives with three cats and regularly suffers from ulcers and hangovers thanks to his heavy drinking. When he experiences a severe headache and cramps, he calls for an ambulance and must convince the operator that he is not just drunk. Hours later, the ambulance has still not arrived, so Lazarescu goes to his neighbors, Sandu (Doru Ana) and Miki (Dana Dogaru), for medicine. Sandu realizes Lazarescu's condition is serious and calls for a paramedic, Mioara (Luminita Gheorghiu). Mioara drives Lazarescu from hospital to hospital, but each one rejects him; all the emergency rooms are overflowing, and the doctors think Lazarescu has brought his illness on himself by drinking too much. Mioara refuses to give up, but Lazarescu's time is running out.
