The Desert Rats is the 1953 war movie classic that pits the Desert Fox, Erwin von Rommel (James Mason), the German field marshal of WWII, against a ragtag group of determined Australians. Rommel has the British on the run, and it looks as though the Germans will be victorious. However, they're stopped at the city of Tobruk where only a few, unkempt Australian troops attempt to hold their ground led by Captain Tammy MacRoberts (Richard Burton). Captain Tammy and has troops make bold but ill-advised raids against the Germans, stopping and belaboring their pursuit of the British. It's for this reason that the little band of soldiers from Down Under are called "The Desert Rats," a pack of scurrying nuisances that no one can seem to get rid of. The British concoct a brilliant but risky plan to bring the German tanks in close, but the plan requires that the Australians then put themselves in great jeopardy.
