The Devil and Max Devlin is the 1981 American film that tells the story of Max Devlin (Elliott Gould) and his encounter with the Devil's right hand man Barney Satin (Bill Cosby). Max is a landlord that regularly cheats his tenants out of money. He has a reputation for being ruthless and unethical. One day, while chasing a tenant down the street, he is struck and killed by a bus. When he gets to Hell, he is informed that he can save himself if he convinces three other people to sell their souls the devil. Max returns to life and realizes the error in his ways. He becomes a more patient, caring man, yet is still attempting to get the three signatures. When he eventually does so, the devil changes the plan on him and Max must make a decision about whose life he wants to save. Also starring Susan Anspach, Adam Rich, and Sonny Shroyer, The Devil and Max Devlin was the first film released by Disney to contain any swearing.
