The Doctor is a 1991 drama directed by Randa Haines and based on the autobiographical book written by Edward Rosenbaum, MD, entitled "A Taste of My Own Medicine: When the Doctor Becomes the Patient." The plot centers on the inspiring true story of an accomplished doctor, Jack MacKee (William Hurt), who has an excellent job, great pay and a lot of recognition and respect. While Dr. MacKee enjoys his prosperous life and fulfilling career, he is unexpectedly diagnosed with throat cancer. All his hospital experience and medical knowledge are not able to relieve the deep pain and anxiety caused by this unfortunate event. Jack sees medicine from a patient's perspective and the results of this experience have a deep positive impact on his vision of medical practice. If Jack will be cured, he is determined to become more than a doctor who writes prescriptions and performs surgeries. Will he get the chance to have another shot at medicine?
