The Don is Dead tells the story of young Frank (Robert Forster) struggling to take over his Mafia family's operations. Deciding Frank lacks leadership experience, Mafia Kingpins Don Angelo Dimorra (Anthony Quinn) and Don Bernardo (J. Duke Russo) divide the business. At stake is a fortune in drug and gambling operations throughout Las Vegas. Don Angelo takes control while Luigi Orlando (Charles Cioffi), the greedy, scheming consigliere of imprisoned Don Bernardo, hatches a murderous plan to seize control by creating a war between the families. Orlando manipulates Frank into believing Don Angelo is having an affair with Frank's fianc''e, Ruby (Angel Tompkins). Frank reacts with predictable rage, calls in two hit men, Vince (Al Lettieri) and Tony (Frederic Forrest), and seeks to destroy Don Angelo's empire. Don Angelo retaliates and Frank flees to Italy. Meanwhile, Don Bernardo is released from prison and he discovers Orlando's plans to take over. After more treachery, gunfights, and a large body count, the dust finally settles.
