The Door in the Floor

Movie Summary

Director:
Tod Williams
Released:
2010
Rating:
R
The Door in the Floor is a dramatic film directed by Tod Williams that follows a young man as his summer time job working as an assistant to a local children's book author and artist in an exclusive Long Island beach community leads him into the underlying tragedy of his new boss's family as they cope with the accidental death of their two sons. Eddie O'Hare (Jon Foster) did not know much about the Cole family outside that they were rich and temporarily separated with their remaining young daughter Ruth (Elle Fanning) cared for by her nanny Alice (Bijou Phillips). An inspiring writer, he jumps at the chance to work with Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) though he soon discovers his idol is a drunken womanizer, cheating on his wife Marion (Kim Basinger) with a local woman Evelyn (Mimi Rogers). To make things even more confusing, Eddie begins an affair with the depressed and devastated Marion, who has all but given up on her life, including Ruth. The Door in the Floor is a fascinating look at a snapshot of a summer as a young man watches a family fall apart.moreless

Surely the best movie yet made from Mr. Irving's fiction. It may even belong in the rarefied company of movies that are better than the books on which they are based.
