The Duchess of Langeais tells the story of a tortured romance between a French general and a nun in 1823 Majorca. While in Majorca, French general Armand de Montriveau (Guilliuame Depardieu) overhears familiar singing coming from a nearby chapel. The voice reminds him of his lost love from Paris. Montriveau has been searching for her for five years. It turns out the nun is Antoinette de Langeais (Jeanne Balibar), his long lost love. The film tells of their meeting in Paris when Montriveau had returned from colonial activity in Africa and Langeais had just married. We see them flirt and pursue their forbidden love. And, just as quickly as it started, the relationship ended. Montriveau was given a new assignment while Langeais, once a lady of high society, escaped to the life of a cloistered nun in Majorca. Chosen as one of the top 10 French films of 2007, The Duchess of Langeais is a compelling tale of dedication and true romance.moreless
