The Duellists is a 1977 historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott and based on a short story called "The Duel" by Joseph Conrad. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the film chronicles a life long series of duels between Armand d'Hubert (Keith Carradine) and Gabriel F''raud (Harvey Keitel), two officers in Napoleon's army. As the story begins, d'Hubert and F''raud are lieutenants who let a minor misunderstanding escalate to a point of honor, which in turn, leads to a duel. When the encounter ends inconclusively, F''raud repeatedly demands satisfaction. As a point of honor, F''raud is unable to walk away from the challenge and continues to face d'Hubert when the two meet. During the passage of time, each comes close to fatally wounding the other, but fate intercedes and both men end up surviving. In the end, F''raud obsession with demanding satisfaction and d'Hubert's inability to walk away drive them to an inexorable yet unexpected conclusion.
