The Edge of the World is the story of the de-population of an outer island of Scotland as men and women leave for the urban centers of the mainland. The film follows two patriarchs as they struggle to live on the island and maintain its traditional ways of life. One, Peter Manson (John Lurie), is determined to stay and live as he and ancestors always have. He also wants his son Robbie (Eric Berry) to stay so that he will help keep their way of life going. However, Robbie wants to leave and explore new worlds beyond his tiny home island. The other, James Gray (Finlay Currie), suspects that staying on the island is not sustainable and is thinking of leaving like many members of the younger generation. The Edge of the World was the first film directed by Michael Powell who would go on to direct such classics as The Red Shoes which heavily influenced the work of Martin Scorsese.moreless
