The Emperor and the Assassin is a 1998 Chinese drama from writer-director Chen Kaige and starring Gong Li, Zhang Fengyi, Zhou Xun, and Li Xuejian in a riveting story of historical romance set in the 3rd century BC, when the tyrannical Emperor-to-be Ying Zheng would sacrifice everything to gain more power. In an attempt to intimidate the leaders of the six remaining Chinese states, Ying devises an elaborate ruse to surreptitiously commission an assassination attempt on himself. Ying will know the attack is coming, and his effortless survival will make him appear invincible to his enemies. Ying sends his beloved concubine, Zhao, to infiltrate the Yan state and persuade a professional assassin to kill Ying. However, Zhao becomes romantically involved with her assassin of choice, and she's suddenly caught in the middle of a deadly love triangle.
