The End is a comedy film that follows one man's attempts to end his life. Sonny Lawson (Burt Reynolds) is told that he has a toxic blood disease and only six months to live. Not wanting to suffer for those six months, Sonny decides to take his own life. He swallows many pills, but he does not die. Instead, he ends up in a psychiatric hospital where he meets Marlon (Dom DeLuise), another disturbed patient. He agrees to help Sonny kill himself. But every attempt he makes at suicide, including hanging himself and jumping off a tower, fails. Sonny makes a plan to escape from the hospital where it will be easier to kill himself. What proceeds is a series of hilarious events that shows a different side of Sonny. In one last attempt to end his life, Sonny has a revelation as an unexpected person appears. Will Sonny ever be able to kill himself? Watch The End to find out.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Time Out

An engaging attempt to take the piss out of the crocodile tears that have been gleefully exploited since Love Story.

  • 50

The Globe and Mail (Toronto) Jay Scott

An absurdist comedy such as The End, with the tone teetering from slapstick to sorrow, is quite another matter, requiring a sophistication Reynolds simply doesn't have. [27 May 1978]

  • 50

    The Dissolve

Eventually, the film's old-fashioned, shtick-friendly tone stops seeming charming and becomes exhausting because DeLuise exerts so much effort where none is necessary.
