The English Surgeon is a riveting documentary of English neurosurgeon, Henry Marsh, and his special interest in helping the downtrodden in the Ukraine. In 1992, Marsh was visiting the Ukraine to give a speech relating to brain surgery, and what he found there would impact his life in a profound way. The conditions he found were dreadful and he dedicated himself to returning often to help the most needy people in this former Soviet country. Marsh works closely with a Ukrainian doctor named Igor Kurilets, providing him with training and equipment, and performing many of the most difficult operations himself. One particular case of Marsh's that is highlighted in the movie is of a man named Marian. He has a brain tumor that gives him epileptic seizures, and the tumor must be removed. Marian must be awake so his motor functions can be monitored, and there is only some local anesthetic available. The determination of the Marsh and the spirit of Marian are incredibly uplifting and represent the overall impact that Henry Marsh has had on the people of the Ukraine.moreless
