The Fall of The Roman Empire, directed by Anthony Mann, was the last of the great Roman epics until Gladiator revived the genre over 35 years later. It tells the story of the dream of the emperor Marcus Aurelius (Alec Guinness), that Rome would lead the world as a peaceful republic uniting all humanity, and how the ambitious and malevolent Commodus (Christopher Plummer), the emperor's son, destroyed that dream upon succeeding him. Sophia Loren plays Livilla, the daughter of Marcus Aurelius, and Stephen Boyd is cast as her lover, Livius (a fictitious character combining several real historical personages). Co-starring James Mason, Anthony Quayle, Mel Ferrer, and Omar Sharif.
