The Favor

Movie Summary

Director:
Donald Petrie
Released:
1994
Rating:
R
The Favor is a romantic comedy that features Kathy Whiting (Harley Jane Kozak), a housewife that is haunted by a past relationship. While she wishes to remain faithful to her husband, Peter Whiting (Bill Pullman), she has always wanted to sleep with her old boyfriend Tom Andrews (Ken Wahl). Since this fantasy still lingers in her mind, she develops a devious scheme that she thinks will help put her mind at ease. Kathy convinces her best friend, Emily Embrey (Elizabeth McGovern), to beguile Tom and disclose the details of their affair. After doing this, Emily tells Kathy that Tom is a great lover and that she had a good time with him. Lust and jealousy begins to get the better of Kathy, as Emily's affair with Tom begins to turn over in her mind. To make matters worse, Emily finds out that she is pregnant. The question arises, however, as to whether or not the baby belongs to Tom, or her boyfriend Elliot Fowler (Brad Pitt).moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Janet Maslin

The Favor remains funny and credible in ways that prove feminist comedy is not an oxymoron.

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The screenplay, by Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon, has a good feel for female best-friend relationships, and the dialogue has life and edge to it.

  • 30

    Variety Leonard Klady

The direction and technical elements are obvious, bright and vapid, while the performers struggle against staggering odds to provide nuance.
