The Field pits a wealthy American foreigner against a simple but determined local Irish farm worker. "Bull" McCabe (Richard Harris) has tilled the same land that the generations before him have worked. His peasant family continues to rent the same land, so much so that the locals simply think of it as Bull's land. However, the widow (Frances Tomelty) who actually owns the land decides that the time has come to put it up for auction. No one among the local townsfolk would dare bid against Bull when he and his family finally try to take possession of the land that has always been beneath their feet. However, a wealthy and intrusive American, Peter (Tom Berenger), has no such sensibilities. He moves in to take the land at the auction, and given his affluence, there is little that Bull can do. Bull instead decides to rally his supporters against the interloper in an ideological quest for dignity against all odds.
