The Fighting Temptations is a musical comedy starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Beyonce Knowles. Darrin (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is a superficial advertising executive living in New York City. One day he receives tragic news that his aunt has passed away. He is requested at her funeral in Monte Carlo, Georgia, where he learns upon arriving that she has left him a hefty inheritance. Darrin can collect the money under one condition: he must help the local gospel choir train and win an upcoming choir competition. Darrin accepts the proposition reluctantly, and begins to rally participants. Along the way, he finds Lilly (Beyonce Knowles), a woman with the strongest voice he has ever heard. Darrin and Lilly develop feelings for one another and begin dating, but fight physical temptations to engage in intercourse, hence the title of the movie. Does Darrin, a shallow man from the advertising world, have what it takes to win a gospel choir competition? And can he and Lilly fight their physical temptations? Watch to find out!

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

A rousing, warmhearted comedy, as infectious as the gospel music it celebrates.

  • 60

    Variety

Paper-thin plot serves as a pretext for rousing gospel numbers in The Fighting Temptations, which straddles styles and eras to get everybody's toes tapping.

  • 40

The New York Times Dana Stevens

This movie feels phony and slick, as if it were cooked up by Darrin's cynical ad agency, rather than at his aunt's stove down in Montecarlo.
